Luisa Girnus zeigt das enge Verhältnis von politischem Lernen und politischer Legitimation hinsichtlich politischer Mündigkeit auf. Politische Legitimation wird dabei als Begründen und Bewerten politischen Handelns verstanden – ein Verständnis, das vor dem Hintergrund aktuell beobachteter Krisenhaftigkeit entwickelt wird und das gesamtgesellschaftliche Aushandeln legitimitätsbegründender Normen in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Im Hinblick auf politisches Lernen stellt die Autorin dabei die Frage nach der subjektiven Relevanz verschiedener Legitimationsaussagen in der politischen Praxis. Anhand einer Querschnittsstudie mit Jugendlichen zeigt sie, welche Relevanz verschiedenen Legitimationsaussagen im Austausch über politisches Handeln zugeschrieben wird. In Bezug auf die didaktische Umsetzung legt Luisa Girnus dar, wieso gerade in der unterschiedlichen Relevanzzuschreibung legitimationsgebender Kriterien Lernanlässe gefunden werden können und auch gesucht werden sollten.
