Wilhelm Christian Weitling zählte zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Frühsozialisten und Organisatoren der frühproletarischen Bewegung. Diese politische Biographie befasst sich mit dem Leben Weitlings von der Kindheit über die Ausbildung bis zum revolutionären Demokraten und zu seinen politischen Aktivitäten. Auch seine wichtigsten politischen Theorien und Werke werden vorgestellt und interpretiert. Weitling forderte eine soziale Republik, die allen Menschen Arbeit und soziale Sicherheit gewähren sollte. Seine scharfsinnige Sozialkritik orientierte sich am Urchristentum, und er betrachtete die demokratische Partei zur Rettung der Revolution 1848/49 als unverzichtbar. 1849 schloss er seine Vereine der Arbeiterverbrüderung an und emigrierte dann in die USA, wo er 1871 starb.
