Erstmals wird aus einer zeitgenössischen Perspektive und unter Hinzuziehung der Peri- und Paratexte Gottscheds «Deutsche Schaubühne» als Projekt ernstgenommen. Die bisher vorherrschende Forschungsperspektive, es handle sich nur um eine Beispielsammlung zur Illustration der dramenpoetologischen Kapitel der «Critischen Dichtkunst», traut der «Schaubühne» kein Konzept zu. Dagegen beleuchtet die Autorin dieses Bandes, dass Gottsched durch die scheinbar fehlerhafte Veröffentlichungsreihenfolge der sechs Bände und durch spielerischen Umgang mit den Regeln die Dichotomie zwischen Poetik und dramatischer Praxis aufbricht und eine praktische Poetik der dramatischen Gattungen entwickelt. In detaillierten Textanalysen zeigt sie, warum es an der Zeit ist für eine Neubewertung der «Deutschen Schaubühne».
