Demokratie kann ohne die Herstellung von Öffentlichkeit nicht existieren. Politische Partizipation und eine möglichst transparente Kommunikation im öffentlichen Raum bedingen sich wechselseitig. Beide Prinzipien stehen in der Gegenwart einer sich rasant globalisierenden Welt unter enormen Veränderungsdruck. Staat, Nation und die Identität von Gesellschaften hängen davon ab, wie sich Öffentlichkeit in demokratischen Foren ausgestalten lässt. Empirisch wie theoretisch wird in diesem Band anhand der Theorien von Jürgen Habermas und Hannah Arendt sowie am Beispiel der Vorgänge in der Ukraine rund um die Orangene Revolution und der Konstellation in Polen verdeutlicht, wie sehr das Prinzip von Öffentlichkeit in eine vielleicht grundlegende Metamorphose gerät, was zu gravierenden Veränderungen im Zuschnitt des demokratischen Modells führt.
