The story follows Paul Verdayne, a young English nobleman who is sent away to France and Switzerland after being caught with the parson's daughter. In Switzerland, he meets an older woman referred to as "the Lady" and they engage in a passionate relationship for three weeks. Paul later discovers that the Lady is actually the queen of a Russian dependency and her husband is abusive towards her. After their encounter, she disappears and Paul returns to England. He eventually learns that they have a son together, but before they can reunite, the Lady is murdered by her husband. Paul spends the next five years traveling until he decides to meet his son. The novel received negative reviews in the UK and US, with critics calling it dull, stupid, and vulgar. However, it became popular in the US, selling 50,000 copies in the first three weeks. The book was adapted into several films, and it also inspired a humorous doggerel.
