Most of the stories were originally published in The New Age, with the first story being "The Child-Who-Was-Tired." The collection was published by Stephen Swift & Co Ltd, and there were multiple impressions of the book. Mansfield refused permission for a reprint in 1920, but her husband John Middleton Murry reprinted them after her death. The stories were written after Mansfield's stay in a German spa town in 1909, reflecting on German habits and the exploitation of women. One story, "A Birthday," is set in turn-of-the-century Thorndon and is based on Mansfield's father. The collection includes stories such as "Germans at Meat," "The Baron," and "Frau Fischer.
