Einerseits gemahnt das Fragment an die Verletzlichkeit des menschlichen Seins und die Vergänglichkeit materieller Dinge, andererseits verweist es auf die Möglichkeit der Erneuerung und animiert wie bei einer Spurensuche zum Forschen nach der Ergänzung. In der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur gibt es einige Beispiele für fragmentarisch überlieferte Texte, für fingierte Fragmente sowie für das Fragment als Motiv. Die Studie stellt Definitionen, Typen und Funktionen des Fragments vor. Exemplarisch werden drei jugendliterarische Texte auf der Basis von Ansätzen der Materialitätsforschung sowie der Narratologie analysiert: die Tagebücher der Anne Frank (1942-1944), Verloren in Eis und Schnee (2018) von Davide Morosinotto und An die, die wir nicht werden wollen von Nils Mohl (2022). Der Korpus ist auf diaristische Texte reduziert, so dass aus einer anthropologisch-literaturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive die Verknüpfung von Fragmentierung und Identitätskonzept besonders in den Fokus rückt.
