This book presents an overview of recent developments in the use of nanomaterials, such as nanocellulose, nanolignin, and nanoclay, in the synthesis of sustainable, bio-based adhesives for manufacturing high-performance, eco-friendly wood-based composites with enhanced properties, close-to-zero formaldehyde emission, and a lower environmental footprint for advanced value-added applications. In recent years, bio-based wood adhesives have received great attention as a sustainable alternative to the conventional synthetic adhesives used in the wood-based industry. However, bioadhesives based on natural and renewable feedstocks, such as protein, starch, lignin, and tannin, have inferior properties compared to thermosetting synthetic resins. Reinforcement with nanomaterials with a high aspect ratio has the potential to improve the performance of bio-based wood adhesives and the technological properties of wood composites. The book explores the present-day challenges and future prospects of using nanomaterials in bio-based wood adhesives. The content of this book appeals to materials scientists, wood scientists, environmental scientists, and wood-based panel industry professionals.

Dr. Petar Antov is a Professor at the University of Forestry, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. His main research interests are in the field of wood technology, wood-based composites, bio-based wood adhesives, formaldehyde emission, formaldehyde scavengers, eco-friendly wood-based composites, occupational safety, and health at work in wood industry enterprises, ergonomics, and ergonomic design of furniture products. Dr. Antov has been involved in various national and international research and educational projects in the fields of the wood industry, forestry, and education. He also acts as a Reviewer in various world-renowned scientific journals in the field of wood science and technology. Dr. Antov has been a Guest Editor of several special issues in different scientific journals. Dr. Antov has been appointed as an Editorial Board Member of several SCI journals, as well as a Programme Committee Member of several national and international scientific conferences.
Dr. Lubis received his B.Sc. in Forestry from IPB University (Bogor, Indonesia) in 2011 and integrated master/doctoral and Ph.D. in wood science and technology from Kyungpook National University (Daegu, South Korea) in 2019. He is a Research Professor at the Research Center for Biomass and Bioproducts, National Research, and Innovation Agency of Indonesia. Dr. Lubis' research interests include wood adhesives, wood adhesion, forest products and technology, natural resin adhesives, and polymer composites.
Dr. Lee earned his Ph.D. in Wood Science and Technology at the Faculty of Forestry, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Following graduation, he continued his academic career as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Forestry, Universiti Putra Malaysia, for 3.5 years and as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products, Universiti Putra Malaysia, for 4 years. He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at the Universiti Teknologi MARA Pahang Branch. He has served as a Reviewer for a number of reputable journals and is a Guest Editor for several SCI journals. Dr. Lee is actively involved in various national and international research projects in the field of the wood industry and forestry.
Dr. Hamid R. Taghiyari - his main area of expertise is fluid flow and permeability in wood and wood-based composites, wood modification techniques, and utilization of nanomaterials in wood and wood-based composites. He has intensively worked on the effects of different nanomaterials on properties of solid wood (different species), and composite panels as well, over the last two decades. The nanomaterials he worked with started with nanometals (including silver, copper, and zinc oxide); soon he turned to minerals as they are more abundant, cheaper, and with lower environmental hazards. The results of his studies have been published in a wide range of academic journals. He had the privilege of mentoring over 40 post-graduate students, mainly on the utilization of nanomaterials to improve different properties in solid wood, and wood-based composite panels as well, including physical and mechanical properties, fire retardants, and biological durability against wood-deteriorating fungi and insects.
