Hydrogen Systems

Hydrogen Systems, Volume I is a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Hydrogen Systems held in Beijing, China, on May 7-11, 1985. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the state of the art in hydrogen systems as an alternative source of energy. The discussions are organized around the following themes: hydrogen from fossil fuels; electrolysis; photolytic hydrogen generation; thermo- and photochemical methods of hydrogen production; hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide; catalysts; bio-production of hydrogen; novel and hybrid methods of hydrogen production; hydrogen storage and handling; metal, titanium, lanthanum, and light hydrides; and hydrogen utilization. Comprised of 53 chapters, this volume first deals with central place theory and the dominance of hydrogen as an energy carrier, followed by a detailed account of hydrogen production from fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum coke. The reader is systematically introduced to photoelectrocatalytic splitting of water into hydrogen by doping sandwich semiconductor photoelectrodes; and visible light-induced formation of hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide. Subsequent chapters explore the photocatalytic cleavage of water on noble metal photocatalysis, with particular reference to hydrogen generation through photoinduced reduction of water and oxygen generation through photoinduced oxidation of water; hydrogen production using an immobilized co-culture of anaerobic and photosynthetic bacteria; and storage and handling of liquid hydrogen in automotive vehicles. This monograph will be of interest to scientists, engineers, environmentalists, and energy planners.
