This professional book offers practical materials that provide fellow academics with tools to structure and scaffold learning experiences that reflect the practice context in which social work and human services are offered. It serves as a practical resource tailored for teaching academics in social work and human services education, and it is designed to be useful for learning across other social science and education disciplines as well. The chapters describe the pedagogy informing the design of the learning activities and present and describe specific teaching activities designed to engage students with complex subject matters. Where applicable, some chapters include downloadable resources to be used and implemented by the reader in their teaching. This book is organised into discrete themes that include skills-based activities, embedding academic literacy activities into teaching, social justice learning activities, small group teaching and learning online, using case studies and vignettes for small group learning and embedding learning through games and arts-based artefacts.

Dr. Michele Jarldorn is a senior lecturer and researcher in Social Work at the Magill Campus, University of South Australia. Her research focuses on the experiences of women leaving prison and the connection between gendered violence, mental health and substance use.She specialises in using inclusive, co-design and participatory action research methods which respectfully involve participants as collaborators. Her Ph.D. thesis 'Radically rethinking imprisonment: A photovoice exploration of life in and after prison in South Australia' was conferred in 2018 and was awarded the Flinders University Vice Chancellors Prize for Thesis Excellence. She is the Social Work Honours coordinator and teaches the courses Applied Social Research and Mental Health and Mental Wellbeing.
Assoc. Prof. Cate Hudson is the Dean of Programs for UniSA Justice & Society at the University of South Australia. She has over 20 years experience teaching in Higher Education, coordinating and teaching courses in the Bachelor and Master of Social Work programs. During that time Cate has relied heavily on digital technology and the careful design of her teaching environments to reach out to students in diverse locations. The student voice heavily influenced the way she created and delivered learning. In 2019, Cate was awarded a University Citation for outstanding contribution to student learning for her work in sustained innovation and leadership in the use of technology to provide inclusive and accessible learning environments for dispersed student cohorts in social work.
