Solid organ transplantation has become a standard of care for the treatment of life-threatening organ failure. The number of surviving solid organ transplant recipients exceeds the capacity of transplant centers to provide all aspects of care for them. Primary care providers need to be increasingly well-versed in the care of patients who have received a solid organ transplant, including addressing infections, metabolic complications, mental health, increased risk of cancer, and general preventive care.
The second edition of this text continues to include overviews of solid organ transplantation, anti-rejection medications, as well as chapters addressing issues unique to heart, lung, kidney, and liver transplantation. The most notable event since the first edition was the unprecedented effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on solid organ transplant recipients. COVID-19 has affected solid organ transplant recipients in multiple clinically important ways. Issues such as drug interactions with COVID treatment, preventive health such as infection prevention and vaccinations and organ-specific complications and infectious diseases have been added. Additional new topics include as women’s health, mental health, and pediatrics.
Primary Care of the Solid Organ Transplant Recipient is a unique text that provides the reader with organ and complication-specific sections that can be independently read as they relate to the individual physicians and their patients. Written by experts in the field, this text is a valuable resource for primary care providers, medical students, residents and anyone involved in the care of solid organ transplant recipients.
