Professor Akbulut graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. In 2008, he completed his residency in General Surgery at Baskent University Faculty of Medicine. During his residency, he had the privilege of training under the mentorship of Prof Mehmet Haberal, a globally recognized pioneer in organ transplantation, where he developed foundational skills in advanced liver surgery. After completing his residency, he began his surgical and academic career at Diyarbakir Research and Training Hospital. From 2011 to 2012, he completed a highly competitive and prestigious fellowship in liver transplant surgery at the Liver Transplant Institute of Inonu University Faculty of Medicine, gaining extensive experience in living donor liver transplantation. This invaluable experience was greatly enhanced under the mentorship and guidance of Prof Sezai Yilmaz, the esteemed director of the transplant program, whose visionary leadership played a pivotal role in shaping Prof. Akbulut’s advanced surgical skills and academic perspective. In 2014, he joined the faculty of the Liver Transplant Institute of Inonu University and earned the title of Associate Professor the following year. In 2020, he was promoted to Full Professor of Surgery at Inonu University.

Prof. Akbulut has performed over 700 hepatectomies (including donor hepatectomy, tumor surgery, and procedures for benign liver disease) as an integral part of the donor team at Inonu University’s Liver Transplant Institute. His expertise has been recognized internationally, including his induction into the International College of Surgeons (FICS) in 2012 and the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2013. His research primarily focuses on hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery, cutting-edge liver transplantation techniques, hydatid disease management, and complex appendiceal pathologies, reflecting his commitment to advancing surgical innovation and patient care. He has a special interest in the management of complex malignant and benign conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder, with a particular focus on living donor hepatectomy as a cornerstone of his surgical practice.

In addition, he completed his PhD in Public Health in 2020 and is currently pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics and Medical Bioinformatics. Has authored over 390 scientific articles and has an H-index of 30. In the past two years, he has been recognized as one of the most influential scientists worldwide, earning a place on Stanford University's prestigious list of leading researchers. His unwavering dedication to clinical excellence and pioneering research continues to inspire his peers and the next generation of medical professionals, solidifying his reputation as a leader in the field.
