Gewaltige Mengen an Alkohol gelangten in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts auf dänischen Schiffen nach Indien. Wein, Madeira, Bier und Branntwein halfen, einen steten Silberstrom nach Asien zu reduzieren. Ebenso prägten sie weit über die dänischen Handelsplätze am Indischen Ozean hinaus das Konsumverhalten der europäischen Kolonialgesellschaft. Das Buch untersucht qualitative und quantitative Aspekte des dänischen Alkoholhandels mit Südasien. Es fragt nach Konjunkturtrends, der Handelspraxis sowie nach Akteuren des einträglichen Geschäfts. Zudem betrachtet es Konsum und Alkoholmissbrauch in den dänischen Kolonien Tranquebar und Serampore.
