Gedenkstätten, -projekte und -artefakte sind anspruchsvolle Gestaltungsaufgaben. Durch die Analyse der gestalteten Oberflächen lassen sich neben reflektierten Gestaltungsentscheidungen auch Einflüsse sichtbar machen, die nicht oder kaum reflektiert wurden. Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich, anknüpfend an Walter Benjamins Begriff des Entstaltens, diesen erst noch freizulegenden Aspekten. Sie begibt sich auf die Suche nach ihren kritischen Potenzialen. Dem Erschütternden im Gedenken an die Shoah wird – aufgrund der von ihm ausgehenden Einsicht in die Notwendigkeit einer kritischen Gesellschaftstheorie – eine besondere Würdigung zuteil.
