Hans Rytger Kricheldorf wurde im Jahre 1942 in Freiburg i. Br. geboren und hat dort Chemie studiert. Nach der Promotion 1968 und der Habilitation 1974 wurde er 1980 an der Universität Freiburg zum außerplanmäßigen Professor ernannt. Im Jahre 1982 wechselte er auf Vollprofessur für makromolekulare Chemie an der Universität Hamburg, wo er bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Jahr 2008 tätig war. Er hat mehr als 800 Forschungsartikel in internationalen Fachzeitschriften publiziert sowie zahlreiche Bücher über Polymerchemie, Materialwissenschaften und Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften.
