About author(s)

Dr. Eisei NOIRI

Dr. Eisei Noiri is internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of acute kidney injury and his expertise in acute blood purification therapy and apheresis. From 2005 to 2015, he served as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Hemodialysis and Apheresis at the University of Tokyo Hospital. During this period, he was actively engaged in clinical practice, research, and education, while also promoting the standardization of therapies to enhance the quality and precision of patient care. Through the National University Liaison Council, these initiatives were disseminated among national university hospitals, contributing to the advancement of high-level clinical practice in Japan.
In the area of apheresis therapy—often performed in critically ill patients—Dr. Noiri has advocated for accurate, evidence-based prescriptions, sometimes described as “precision apheresis.” Such approaches have played an important role in improving patient outcomes. Many of the core techniques of apheresis originated in Japan, and Dr. Noiri has endeavored to present them in a clear and accessible manner for both domestic and international audiences.
The first English edition of this manual was well received in Japan and abroad, including Chinese-speaking regions. The favorable reception of that edition has enabled the publication of this revised second edition. It is the editor’s sincere hope that this volume will serve as a useful reference for healthcare teams engaged in apheresis worldwide.

Prof. Kent Doi

Prof. Kent Doi is internationally recognized as a leading authority in acute kidney injury and critical care medicine. At the University of Tokyo Hospital, he chairs the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, where his leadership extends across nephrology, emergency medicine, and disaster medical management. He also serves as President of the Japanese Society for Acute Blood Purification in Critical Care and Vice President of the Japanese Society for Emergency Medicine. In these roles, he plays a pivotal part in shaping the direction of Japan’s acute medicine, ensuring that the nation’s critical care system—from disaster response to pandemic preparedness—remains resilient and forward-looking.
Prof. Doi has been at the forefront of integrating big data analytics and artificial intelligence into acute care research, pioneering predictive models that redefine how we anticipate and respond to patient deterioration. His work has helped establish precision medicine approaches in AKI and blood purification, combining advanced science with bedside relevance.
With his broad vision and global standing, Prof. Doi brings both authority and innovation to this revised edition. His editorial guidance has ensured that the book reflects not only Japan’s unique leadership in blood purification therapy, but also the evolving international standards of critical care.
