Viele erinnern die Volkssolidarität als Träger von Seniorenklubs, Mittagsversorgung und Hauswirtschaftsdiensten, manche vielleicht auch als staatliche Massenorganisation. In der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone war die Volkssolidarität zunächst Hilfsaktion gegen Nachkriegsnot. In der frühen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik wurde sie zu einer Unterstützungsorganisation für den Klassenkampf in Westdeutschland und internationale sozialistische Dekolonisationsbemühungen. Die Aktion bzw. Organisation durchlief sehr unterschiedliche Transformationsprozesse. Ob und wie die Volkssolidarität zunächst Soziale Arbeit leistete bzw. als Träger Sozialer Arbeit verstanden werden kann, ist Kernfrage der vorliegenden Studie. Sie arbeitet heraus, wie ihre spezifische Form von Fürsorgetätigkeit, Sozialer Arbeit und Wohlfahrtspflege in der SBZ und frühen DDR politisiert und verstaatlicht wurde.
