Das Buch nimmt die oft erhobene Forderung nach einer menschlichen oder menschlicheren Architektur zum Anlass, das Verhältnis von Architektur und Mensch aus Sicht der Philosophie umfassend zu beleuchten. Nach einleitenden grundsätzlichen Überlegungen wird exemplarisch untersucht, für welche(n) Menschen (welches Menschenbild) in der westlichen Welt im 20. Jahrhundert gebaut wurde und welche Schlussfolgerungen sich für das Bauen ergeben, wenn man philosophisch begründete Annahmen über den Menschen als Ausgangspunkt nimmt. Den Hintergrund der Überlegungen bildet dabei die Philosophische Anthropologie, insbesondere die Philosophie Helmuth Plessners.
