Das Buch untersucht Depression als gesellschaftlich verankerte Erfahrung und rückt ihre Verbindung zu sozialen Ungleichheiten in den Mittelpunkt. Auf Grundlage von 25 biografisch-narrativen Interviews werden vier idealtypische Formen depressiven Erlebens rekonstruiert, die entlang zentraler Ungleichheitsachsen – Klasse, Geschlecht und Race – verlaufen. Gezeigt wird, dass Depression nicht primär aus Überforderung durch Autonomie entsteht, wie es bekannte Lesarten nahelegen (etwa Alain Ehrenbergs Das erschöpfte Selbst), sondern aus strukturell begrenzten Möglichkeiten zur Selbstbestimmung.

Alexey Orlov hat Soziologie (B.A. und M.A.) an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt studiert. Von 2019 bis 2024 war er am dortigen Institut für Soziologie als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter tätig. Im August 2025 verteidigte er erfolgreich seine Dissertation, auf welcher der vorliegende Band aufbaut.
