This open access book offers one of the first comprehensive safety assessments of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), also called cellulose nanofibers—a key class of nanocellulose distinguished by their high strength, light weight, and potential to replace petroleum-derived materials. Translated from a Japanese report originally published by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), this volume integrates findings from peer-reviewed literature and two large national research projects commissioned by NEDO (2017–2019 and 2020–2024). Across ten chapters, the book systematically addresses key safety aspects, including genotoxicity, mesothelioma risk, inhalation, dermal and oral toxicity, workplace emissions, ecotoxicity, and biodegradability. It also provides comparative insights into cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and conventional cellulose materials.

Isamu Ogura is a Group Leader at the Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan. His main research fields include emission and exposure assessment, environmental fate analysis, and risk assessment of chemical substances as well as particulate materials such as nanomaterials and microplastics.
Katsuhide Fujita is a senior staff at the Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan. His research focuses on the toxicological evaluation of nanomaterials using cultured cells and experimental animal models. Leveraging comprehensive gene expression analyses, he aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying nanomaterial-induced toxicity and associated inflammatory responses.
