Das Buch besteht aus einer Sammlung historischer Fakten und Ereignisse aus der mitteldeutschen Region. Dieser Teil unseres Landes war mehr als 150 Jahre von der Braunkohlenförderung und Veredlung geprägt, wurde auch als Chemieregion bezeichnet. Entsprechend dominieren Themen aus der Chemischen Industrie; aber auch die Zuckergewinnung, die Entstehung der Flugzeugindustrie und des Kupferschieferbergbaus finden Beachtung. Doch allein eine Industriegeschichte möchte das Buch nicht sein. Kulturelle Impulse mit überregionaler Bedeutung – wie die Reformation, die Bauhausbewegung oder das Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreich – werden ebenfalls abgehandelt.
