Friedrich Meggendorfer war bereits vor der Machtübernahme durch die Nationalsozialisten ein einflussreicher Erbpsychiater, der zunächst als Privatdozent an der Staatskrankenanstalt Friedrichsberg in Hamburg tätig war und ab Ende des Jahres 1934 den Lehrstuhl für Psychiatrie und Neurologie an der Universität Erlangen inne hatte.
Er stand der NS-Ideologie nahe und war auch persönlich maßgeblich an Zwangssterilisationen und eugenisch motivierten Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen beteiligt. Auch seine Verstrickung in die Krankenmorde im Rahmen der "Aktion T4" sowie der "dezentralen Euthanasie" ist zumindest in einigen Fällen belegt.
Seine Beteiligung an den Krankenmorden wurde zumindest öffentlich nie thematisiert, geschweige denn strafrechtlich verfolgt. Meggendorfers vollständiger wissenschaftlicher Rehabilitation im Jahr 1953 durch seine Emeritierung kam lediglich sein Tod zuvor.
