When Clare Markham hires a firm of builders to build an extension to her house, she finds herself increasingly - and it seems mutually - attracted to one of the workmen, Gary Newby. One evening they succumb to each other's advances, and Clare finds that Gary's hard, muscled body and sheer physicality give her a great deal of pleasure.

The contrast beteen Gary and Clare's current boyfriend, David Allston, Viscount Bonmouth, could not be more marked.
