Goetz Herrmann untersucht die theoretischen Implikationen und begrifflichen Voraussetzungen der derzeit dominierenden Verständnisse von Bedrohung und Sicherheit in der EU und deren Auswirkungen für die Bestimmung von Funktion und Aufgabe von Grenzen in und um Europa. Basierend auf Foucaults Machtanalytik und Deleuzes sozialontologischen Betrachtungen wird eine kritische Perspektive auf ein Denken von (Un-)Sicherheit entwickelt, das um die Problematisierung von Offenheit, Zirkulation, Interkonnektivität, Komplexität und Emergenz kreist. Dies ermöglicht eine Auseinandersetzung mit Verfahren, die auf die Errichtung von „Smart Borders“ ausgerichtet sind. Im Gegensatz zu ,alten‘, repressiven Grenzverfahren beansprucht mobiles Grenzmanagement Offenheit und Mobilität zu garantieren, dennoch bleibt eine reaktive und ressentimentbeladene Grundausrichtung bestehen, die einer repressiven Praxis Vorschub leistet.
