Hauran IV. Sahr al-Ledja, volume II

Fait unique dans l’histoire des sculptures en basalte de Syrie du Sud, cette publication présente un ensemble cohérent de statues syro-romaines trouvées dans cette région. Situé au coeur du plateau basaltique aride du Ledja (ancienne Trachonitide), le sanctuaire a conservé un nombre important de statues appartenant probablement à sa seconde période de construction. Les fragments récoltés durant les fouilles de la mission syro-européenne, depuis 1998, ont permis la reconstitution d’un groupe de sculptures, anciennement érigées sur un podium cubique sur le parvis du temple. Des indications iconographiques, stylistiques et historiques permettent de dater l’ensemble des deux dernières décennies du Ier siècle apr. J.-C., sans doute dans le cadre du règne dans la région des dynastes orientaux, clients de Rome. Les trouvailles de Sahr permettent d’identifier plusieurs groupes de statues dans les régions historiques de la Syrie du Sud : plus de 30 lieux de trouvailles se répartissent entre la Gaulanitide à l’ouest, la Batanée, la plaine de l’Auranitide et le Djebel al-Arab à l’est. Le rayonnement culturel de cette région, située à la croisée d’intérêts hérodiens, nabatéens et syroaraméens, la largement dépassé ses frontières. Le commerce à longue distance, avec ses routes transcontinentales, semble avoir porté les modèles syriens jusqu’en Arabie du Sud, où l’onretrouve des exemples de ses motifs iconographiques. For the first time in the art history of the southern Syrian basalt sculpture which is difficult to be evaluated, the present publication deals with a coherent find complex of this provincial genre of Syro-Roman statuary. Due to its remote location within the arid basalt plateau al-Ledja (ancient Trachonitis), the sanctuary preserved a major lot of sculpture attributable with rather high probability to the embellishment of temple in its second phase of occupation. The fragments collected during the Syro-Franco-German excavations from 1998 onwards, yielded a reconstruction of a sculptural group, once erected on a cubical podium in the temple’s forecourt. Iconographic, stylistic, and historical evidence led to a date of fabrication within the last two decades of the 1st century AD and gain a most probable context with the oriental client dynasts of Rome ruling in that period over the region. The finds from Sahr made it possible to identify further coherent or similar statuary groups in the historical regions of southern Syria. More than 30 findspots distribute from the Gaulanitis in the West, the Batanaea, the Auranitis plain with the Djebel al-‘Arab in the East. The cultural historical radiance spread far beyond this vernacular area of crossing interests of herodian, nabataean and syro-aramaean interests. Single iconographic motives in southern Arabia obviously adopted the prototypes in southern Syria and they seem to have been transferred by long distance commerce via the the transcontinental trading routes. Erstmalig in der Forschungsgeschichte der kunsthistorisch schwer faßbaren südsyrischen Basaltplastik wird mit vorliegender Publikation ein in sich geschlossener Fundkomplex vorgelegt. Aufgrund seiner abgeschiedenen Lage inmitten des Basaltplateaus al-Ledja (antik: Trachonitis) hat sich in dem Heiligtum von Sahr ein umfangreicheres Skulpturenensemple erhalten, das mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ausstattung des dortigen Tempels in seiner zweiten Nutzungsphase diente. Die während der syrisch-französisch-deutschen Gemeinschaftsgrabung in den Jahren ab 1998 geborgenen Skulturenfragmente ermöglichen die Rekonstuktion einer Figurengruppe, die im Vorhof des Tempels auf einem kubischen Podium aufgestellt war. Ikonographische, stilistische und historische Indizien legen eine Datierung in die beiden letzten Jahrzehnte des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. nahe und stellen eine Verbindung mit den orientalischen Klienteldynasten Roms, den Herodiern und Nabatäern, her, die in dieser Zeit über die Region herrschten. Die Funde aus Sahr ermöglichten die Identifikation identischer oder ähnlicher Skulpturengruppen in den historischen Landschaften Südsyriens. Die mehr als 30 Fundorte verteilen sich auf die Gaulanitis im Westen, die Batanaea und Trachonitis sowie auf die Aurantinis mit dem Djebel al-‘Arab im Osten. Die kulturgeschichtliche Ausstrahlung reichte weit über dieses Gebiet sich kreuzender herodischer, nabatäischer und syrischaramäischer Interessen hinaus: Einzelne Bildmotive in Südarabien rezipieren offenbar diese Vorbilder im Süden Syriens. Sie scheinen über den Fernhandel auf den transkontinentalen Karawanenwegen vermittelt worden zu sein.
