To ensure sustainable production of pharmaceutically significant active metabolites (from natural sources) with anti-aging properties, biotechnological interventions become the need of the hour when global warming and environmental pollution result in increasing UV radiation and, consequently, sunburn and aging of the tissue. In that context, the introductory chapter of this book outlines the concept and importance of medicinal plants available in local, national, and global regions that are rich in bioactive compounds responsible for anti-aging effects, along with their distribution, status, and limitations of conventional propagation and their biotechnological enhancement. The subsequent chapter provides insights into how environmental changes affect the anti-aging properties of metabolites in medicinal plants. There are dedicated chapters that provide insights on the genetic basis of anti-aging activity, the chemistry and physiology of modes of action, as well as the cellular mechanisms of secondary metabolites, along with the role of phytohormones for in vitro mass propagation, somatic embryos, their maturation, and the regeneration of anti-aging medicinal plants. Enhancement of anti-aging properties and the production of secondary metabolites with the interventions of LEDs, cell suspension, elicitation, bioreactor, auto-polyploidization, induced mutagenesis, and nanotechnology, as well as CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing. Apart from genetic improvements, focus is given on conservation and exchange of anti-aging medicinal plants via cryopreservation and synthetic seed technologies. In conclusion, the study comprehensively covers secondary metabolite extraction techniques and the clinical evidence and significance of these metabolites. Expert scientists from 15 different countries, such as Argentina, Belgium, Botswana, Cameroon, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, India, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Türkiye, and Vietnam, have contributed 14 insightful chapters to this book. It is noteworthy to mention that there is a sustainable hunt for possible novel anti-aging compounds from natural resources, especially plants and herbs, and this book will be a potential guideline to facilitate that endeavor.

Saikat Gantait
Saikat Gantait is an assistant professor at the Crop Research Unit (Genetics and Plant Breeding), Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), India. Following the completion of his PhD in biotechnology from BCKV, he gained advanced research experience on in vitro conservation of plant germplasms at Universiti Putra Malaysia during his post-doctoral tenure. His 18-year research work so far includes tissue and organ culture, induced mutagenesis and polyploidization, encapsulation/synthetic seed, and cryopreservation of medicinal, aromatic, and ornamental plant germplasms. He is acting as an Editorial Board Member in multiple journals from reputed publisher. His name has been included in the list of Top 2% Scientists Worldwide (2023, 2024 & 2025) by Stanford University. To date, Dr. Gantait has published more than 180 articles/book chapters in peer-reviewed journals/books and edited 5 books.
Dr. Oksana Sytar
Dr. Oksana Sytar obtained her PhD from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine. She has been awarded several international scholarships to conduct advanced research at the University of Hyderabad (India), Technical University of Berlin (Germany), University of Bretagne Sud (France), and the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Slovakia). She is a recognized specialist in plant biochemistry, phytoremediation, and the study of secondary metabolites. Her name has been included in the list of Top 2% Scientists Worldwide (2024 & 2025) by Stanford University. Currently, she is engaged in biotechnological research on rare medicinal plants in Belgium.
Dr. Jayoti Majumder Sarkar
Jayoti Majumder Sarkar is an assistant professor in Floriculture and Landscaping, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), India. She received her MSc and PhD degrees from the prestigious Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India, and has been working for more than 12 years to make a measurable impact to the research fields of nutraceuticals, secondary metabolites, edible flowers, and natural pigments. She also served as an Agricultural Research Scientist at ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, India. Her research works have been published in 44 research/review articles and 14 book chapters in reputed journals/books, and edited/authored 3 books. She guided multiple M.Sc. and Ph.D. students under her supervision. She was selected for a training program in Wuhan, China, on Seed production and crop improvement. She is an active member of several science academies and societies, IAHS, SPH, CWSS, and an editorial board member of JCW, MP, and SPH.
Prof. Uma Rani Sinniah
Uma Rani Sinniah is a Professor at the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). She has more than 40 years of teaching and research experience in the fields of seed technology, cryobiology, germplasm conservation, and plant secondary metabolites, and has successfully completed several projects supported by various national and international funding bodies. She has published >200 peer-reviewed research/review articles, 12 book chapters, and edited 1 book (Springer) to date. Her current research is focused on seed science and technology, cryopreservation, plant cell and tissue culture, and secondary metabolite production.
