Holger Pontow demonstriert, dass interorganisationale Informationssysteme in der arbeitsteiligen maritimen Transportkette zahlreiche Nutzenpotentiale versprechen. Um diese im Vorfeld von Investitionsentscheidungen qualitativ und quantitativ beurteilen zu können, nutzt er im Kern seiner Untersuchung Methoden und Werkzeuge aus den Bereichen des Geschäftsprozessmanagements (speziell Geschäftsprozessmodellierung mittels BPMN) und der Entscheidungstheorie. Es zeigt sich – vor allem auf Basis des vermittelten organisationsübergreifenden Geschäftsprozessverständnisses – dass neben Organisationen, die den Transport und Umschlag realisieren, insbesondere Verlader geeignete Systeme zur Kommunikation verwenden sollten, um die theoretisch möglichen Nutzenpotentiale in der Praxis zu realisieren.
